Getting backlinks to your website is the bread and butter of the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) game. In fact, when you optimize your website for the major search engines such as Google and Yahoo, it will all boil down to getting backlinks. These are links from other websites that recognize your site's value and will direct traffic to it. The more backlinks you get, the better off you'll be in terms of search engine rankings.

Getting backlinks isn't easy though. You have to work hard to get them. Backlinks can only be established from sites that already acknowledge your site's importance. That means you'll have to submit articles to article directories, create forum topics on your niche topic and participate in blogs related to your niche. You can't expect to get any meaningful backlinks without doing these things.

But that's not all. There are two other equally important components to creating backlinks. The first is to get the domain name to which you will attach the backlink to. That means you need to register your domain name with a web registrar like GoDaddy or Namecheap. Once you've done this, you should be able to see a page in your web browser's address bar that points to the name you registered.

Once you have those backlinks established, you can start working on generating some traffic to your site. The best way to do this is through link building, which is essentially writing articles, blog posts, guest posts and press releases that contain links back to your site. The more credible the information you provide about your product, service or industry, the more credible the site that contains your content will be. So when you write an article, you need to include a link to your website somewhere in the article. The same goes for any blog post or press release.

The most important reason why you need to generate some backlinks to your site is because search engines will rank sites according to the strength of their backlinks. So it only makes sense to build as many backlinks to your site as possible. You can do this manually, but it's a tiresome task. That's why a software tool called backlink analyzer is a great idea. It can quickly tell you whether or not your backlinks are doing you any good. It also lets you know exactly which of your links are doing you good and which ones are wasting your time.

Once you've identified which backlinks are hurting your ranking and which ones are helping you out, it's time to work on removing them. The best way to remove a backlink is to rewrite the whole page. A simple search for 'web page rewriting' will list a number of different software programs that you can use to do this. If you're feeling a little more ambitious, you may even want to try a site-specific software program. These usually have a better variety of options and tools, though they can be a bit more expensive.

Whatever you choose, make sure that you have the person who is posting backlinks to your site sign the backlink. This ensures that the link is coming from a trusted source and that the domain name you're linking to has been registered with the proper registrar. (You don't want to end up linking to a site that nobody wants to visit!)

Finally, you need to monitor your backlinks regularly. Most of them will automatically become outdated after seven years. Even so, you should still check them to see how many people are visiting your site. If you see a sudden spike in traffic, you need to act immediately to incorporate that traffic into your SEO efforts.
